I was wondering if two dynamic mics taped together on a boom would work as a stereo mic.
Running them into a mixer and setting one to left and one to right seems like a good idea. Will that work at all well, or are there any low-budget alternatives.

That'll work. Some quick tips though...

First off, if you really need to have true stereo sound, and are going to put the effort in to two mics, then you want to make sure your mics are distanced from one another. I would say at least two meters otherwise this would all be a waste.

Second, not only are you going to have to seperate the inputs into the mixer (ie. left mic into channel 1, right mic into channel 2) you're also going to have to make sure that each channel is set to work with each mic. Basically, make sure that channel 1, your left mic, only sends sound to the recorders left channel and vice versa. I would hate to see you go through all this trouble for stereo sound and then screw it up with something silly.

Sound can be fun. Unfortunately, a lot of filmmakers don't pay as much attention to it as they should. As a safe net my advice would be to record your ambience and location sounds using just a single mic. You can decide which channel to use for these sounds in post.
